History of It's A Dunn Deal Music By Ear, L.L.C.
Music By Ear which is now It’s A Dunn Deal (IADD) Music By Ear, LLC, was birthed over 30 plus years ago. Robin Dunn the founder and CEO began teaching people how to play piano as early as 11 years of age. At age 13, she started her own piano lessons. Robin wanted to share her passion with others who had a desire to become a musician at any age. Due to relocation in the mid 90’s, music lessons were put on hold.
However, in the early 2000, Robin decided to offer lessons to the city she relocated to. The lessons were short lived; and in 2014 with much thought and prayer she decided to give piano lessons another try. This time around was different because Robin began the lessons out of home with just the thought of offering lessons to a small group of clients. In March of 2014, It’s A Dunn Deal Music By Ear obtain its first student. It was not until November 2014 another student was added. As 2015 was approaching, the word begin to got out that Robin was offering piano lessons. After teaching out of her home for 3 years, Robin decided it was time to transition to another location. IADD relocated from Nashville NC to Rocky Mount NC.
While yet still located in the home, Robin decided It’s A Dunn Deal needed to allow their students to display their talents. In 2016 their first recital was held at the Jaycee Park Auditorium in Greenville NC. The first recital yielded over 100 guests and exceeded our expectations. Each year our students diligently prepare for their yearly recital which is held in the fall of the year. In 2017, IADD Music By Ear recital was held at the OIC Auditorium in Rocky Mount NC. In 2018 and 2019 the recitals were held at the Nashville United Methodist Church Braswell Hall.
During It’s a Dunn Deal (IADD) Music By Ear recitals, students performs an individual piece. Level I, II and III students also performs in a group performance along with a live band and singer(s). IADD demonstrates to the audience, our students are capable of playing in live settings.
Our curriculum is unique and non-traditional. We develop students to hear and play music by ear. Students are taught the fundamentals of piano in an unorthodox manner. The difference in our lessons and traditional lessons, we do not teach students to read the staff. However, our students are trained to have knowledge of basic to advanced principles of piano. In other words, we don’t just learn to play songs but are educated in things as such scales, number system, chord progressions, name of chords, musical terms, timing/speed, etc. IADD students are also given student assessments to assure they don’t just PLAY IT but KNOW IT!!
